Nickelodeon – A Brief, Animated History

Nickelodeon started on 1 April 1979, becoming the first cable channel airing shows specifically for children. And that’s how they began the era of cartoons and animated shows.
Nick’s content began to shine in the 1990s, when shows like Pete and Pete, Salute Your Shorts, and Kablam rocked the industry. You might not have heard about these shows. So, you might as well ask your parents. It might be their bread-and-breakfast back in the days.
The show’s positive reviews corresponded directly to huge success. In a matter of years, every child and pre-teenager became addicted to the channel’s intriguing and unique content.
From the 2000s onward, however, the channel started declining. And it all started when Nickelodeon decided to shut down its original studios.
Nick Studios Shuts Down -The End of an Era
Back in its heyday, Nickelodeon Studios was the real deal. In simple terms, it was nothing less than a double-edged sword.
Apart from acting as a state-of-the-art production studio, it also served as a theme park attraction for kids and grown-up loyalists alike. The location of the facility was in the Universal Studios of Florida, which was perfect for family road-trips and planned visits.
The studio had its inaugural ceremony on 7 June 1990. It soon became the largest production studio in Florida, and one of the largest in the United States. By 1994, the total revenue of the studio-cum-park was around $110 million, a whopping figure!
Unfortunately, Nickelodeon decided to part ways with the legendary facility on April 30, 2005. After due consideration, the officials at Nick decided that it was time to move their production. They decided to move to Nickelodeon on Sunset, formerly serving as the Earl Carroll Theatre in California.
Despite the rich cultural history of the new location, Nickelodeon on Sunset never received the praise and acclaim as its former counterpart.
The untimely movement of the production studios from a beloved theme park to a new stage facility was a major reason behind Nickelodeon’s rating decline in the subsequent years.

Why Did They Get Rid of Nickelodeon Studios?

By the early 2000s, programs like game shows faded in terms of popularity. As such, Nickelodeon did not need a large facility to carry on their operations.
They did not need to air live shows and interactive programs anymore. So, in a bid to prevent wastage of money, the company decided to move their production elsewhere.
- California Served All Purposes:
By 2005, Nickelodeon had pretty much shifted all their activities from Florida to New York and California.
The channel shot all the live-action stuff, for instance, in their facility at California.
So, having their production studios in Florida made no sense to them. Hence, the unfortunate move to Nickelodeon on Sunset.

Despite the historical acclaim of Earl Carroll Theatre in California, Nickelodeon loyalists weren’t too happy with the abrupt decision.
For many, the closure of Nickelodeon Studios marked the beginning of the end for the age-old television channel.

- Remember Danny Phantom? It was a popular show during Nick’s golden age. However, the company decided to cancel its subsequent seasons because it was too expensive to make. Crazy, right?
- If you were into Nick’s golden Musicals, you would remember Taina. It was highly popular and had gained a lot of followers. However, Nick decided to discontinue it because it was too costly to produce. And it’s not even the worst part – the writers had already completed the storyline for Season 3! - Remember Rugrats? It was a popular TV series back in the 1990s and early 2000s. The creators of the show didn’t expect Rugrats to be successful and hence stopped making new episodes. Contrary to their belief, the show became a huge hit. Unfortunately, by the time the writers realized that, Nick had already shifted its focus to teenage-centric shows.

Lack of Creativity:
As per several loyal Nickelodeon viewers, the channel lost their boldness and creativity following the sale of their original studios in 2005.
The latest episodes of veteran shows, including legendary assets like SpongeBob SquarePants, lost their momentum after 2010s. According to fans, there was a “formulaic rut” in the channel’s production process.
The shows became too predictable. SpongeBob SquarePants, for instance, continued to air, long after it became clear to the audience that it was past its prime.
So, some bad decisions regarding show cancellations; more bad decisions regarding how long a show should continue; and uneventful storylines – the perfect recipe for disaster.
Emergence of Competition:
By the year 2000, Nickelodeon sat on the throne of a barren but successful kingdom. Barren, we said, because the industry had no other competitors at the same level. Nickelodeon ruled a kingdom they made themselves and played in a league of their own.
But by 2000, some beefed-up competitors arrived on the scene.
Cartoon Network and Disney Channel, for example, launched their own line of exciting cartoons and TV shows. While they set on a positive trajectory, Nickelodeon failed to adapt.
They made some terrible production-based decisions. For instance, Nickelodeon decided to ride on the live-action bandwagon, which resulted in significant decline in ratings at the time.
Similarly, the emergence of OTT platforms like Netflix and Hulu presented a more serious problem – Nick had a hard time finding talented creators.
Earlier, individual creators had to partner with corporations like Nick and Cartoon Network to put their creativity to effect. Now, these talented people could simply work on their own and send pitches to Netflix to get production support.
The modern setting, therefore, was a bit too brutal for Nickelodeon’s liking.
Dan Schneider – Bane or Boon for Nickelodeon?
During Nickelodeon’s golden period, Dan Schneider was a popular name in the Studios. The veteran producer was a part of some exciting and successful shows including Drake and Josh and All That.
But he was also a part of Nickelodeon’s decline from 2005 to 2018. Fans alleged that the producer lost his creativity and created a predictable formula where the new episodes of old shows and latest cartoons were simply not enticing enough.
Then came the big blow in 2018 – a massive controversy.
Schneider parted his ways with Nickelodeon after allegations emerged that he verbally abused the young stars of Nickelodeon’s numerous shows.
Amid the internet storm that followed, Nickelodeon and Schneider released a join statement, revealing that the decades-old relationship was coming to an end.
The controversy did provide some food for thought. If the allegations were true, did Nickelodeon become a toxic space for young stars?
Maybe the reason Nick couldn’t attract creative employees was because working with Schneider was a nightmare for industry professionals.
Either way, Schneider’s relationship with Nickelodeon was surely a rollercoaster. Now, it’s up to the viewers to decide if the ride was bumpy or smooth, or downright catastrophic.
Will Nickelodeon Disappear? Our Objective Opinion
Now, we know the obvious reasons behind Nickelodeon’s drastic decline. The question stands – will Nick survive the storm? Or is it finally time to bid the veteran channel goodbye?
In our opinion, Nickelodeon is not going anywhere; at least not for the next couple of reasons.
The primary reason behind our analysis is the influence of Paramount, the parent company backing Nickelodeon’s operations.
Paramount has massive influence in the industry. As long as it backs Nickelodeon, the veteran channel is not going anywhere. With their support, Nick can even start their own line of streaming platforms to cater to the modern market.
Final Words
Nickelodeon was nothing short of a monument for our childhood. It’s sad to see that the company is undergoing such a massive decline.
But there is still some hope for loyal viewers. The television channel is still fighting to survive. To show our support, the best we can do is demand what we want from the production.
