What Happened to Adobe Flash?
Back in 1996, Macromedia acquired FutureSplash, which was originally launched by FutureWave in 1993.
The said technology was already popular among companies like Disney Online and Microsoft. They used this technology to display animated content in a web browser.
Later Macromedia rebranded FutureSplash as Macromedia Flash 1.0 and launched it alongside a plugin called Flash Player.
By the mid-2000s, Flash became extremely popular due to its simplicity. It was a light plugin and easy to install. Also, it was supported by most browsers.
Flash used vector graphics due to which the file sizes were small, which was crucial at a time when people used dial-up internet connections. Over time, Flash was improved and soon Flash 5 was introduced with ActionScript.
Later in 2005, Macromedia was acquired by Adobe Systems, which then took over Flash and rebranded it as Adobe Flash Player.
Flash is the life behind countless websites, games, and cartoons on the internet. Not just that, but it also played a significant role in the adaption of streaming videos. It enabled users to play videos from their web browser, provided that they had Flash Player installed in their system.
There was a time when Flash was used by sites like Vimeo, Google Video, YouTube, and others. It was also used by streaming services like BBC i-player and Hulu back in the 2000s.
But things started to change as Flash was found to have several flaws. It was evident that the internet will soon outgrow the need for Flash Player, and that’s exactly what happened.
Why did Adobe Flash Shut Down?
Adobe Flash has been around since the 90s. There are not one, but multiple reasons that led to its demise. One of the biggest reasons behind the fall of Flash was security.
Flash was responsible for a major portion of the tech world. This made it an obvious target for hackers, which caused Adobe to release frequent security patches.
Not just that, but Flash also performed poorly. For some users, it required full CPU usage to view or play Flash-related content.
In 2007, Apple released the first iPhone and it didn’t support Flash. This was the first big blow to Flash.
Sites like YouTube had to ditch Flash to make their content compatible with iPhone. This along with security issues led to the fall of Flash.
Adobe officially stopped support for Flash on 31st December 2020. It killed the platform permanently. Flash can no longer be downloaded.
Adobe has also blocked all Flash-related content. The company recommends users uninstall Flash for security reasons.
Flash will no longer receive any updates or security patches. Its time is officially over and it will be remembered for its golden era. Users cannot download older versions of Flash either.
Even if you have Flash installed on your device, it is no longer supported by Adobe so it’s better to remove it.
